Happy DIY Friday lovelies! Who doesn’t love a good sprinkle donut? I know I do and since today is my 35th birthday, I think I will be eating a few! Not these though, because they are bath bombs! That’s right, these darling donuts are actually adorable bath bombs that would make the perfect bridal shower favor for the donut-loving bride. They are much easier to make than they look and you need no experience, just a little patience and the ability to read my directions below. Get ready to have a luxurious bath with these skin-loving sweets… and I apologize if they make you end up craving actual donuts!
Package
Use 4″ x 6″ treat bags and some washi tape to package these darling donuts!
SUPPLIES:
Baking Soda (sodium bicarbonate)
Citric Acid
Fragrance Oil (I used Pure Honey, Cocoa Butter Cashmere, and Strawberry)
Coconut Oil (if it’s cold it will solidify, microwave to liquify)
Polysorbate 80 (helps to prevent ring around the tub)
La Bomb Colorant (use only this colorant!)
Dutch Processed Cocoa Powder (for color)
Witch Hazel (put in a spray bottle)
Mica, Glitter and Alcohol for sprinkles
TOOLS:
Donut Half Mold
Glass Mixing Bowls
Parchment Paper
Sieve
Gloves
Pipets
Digital Scale
Paint Brush
Measuring Cups and Spoons
4″x6″ Treat Bags + Washi Tape (for packaging)
Donut Bath Bomb Recipe:
For the cake:
3/4 cup Baking Soda
6 tablespoons Citric Acid
.6 oz. Coconut Oil
6 mL Fragrance Oil
2 mL Polysorbate 80
LaBomb colorant of your choice, see recipes below
Half the recipe above for the frosting:
1/2 cup Baking Soda
1/4 cup Citric Acid
.3 oz. Coconut Oil
3 mL Fragrance Oil
1 mL Polysorbate 80
LaBomb colorant of your choice, see recipes below
Strain Dry Ingredients
Strain the baking soda and citric acid through a sieve to make sure all the big clumps are broken up.
Add Wet Ingredients
Next, add the wet ingredients: coconut oil, polysorbate 80, fragrance oil, and LaBomb colorant. Refer to the recipe above and the color recipes below.
Really get in there and mix this mixture! It can be abrasive so wear gloves if you have a nice manicure. Make sure to break up all colorant clumps and fully incorporate into mix. If the color isn’t dark enough for you – add more!
Witch Hazel
Pure witch hazel is the secret ingredient to all bath bombs, it helps to hold the mixture together without water! If you’re in a moist climate, you might only need 1-2 pumps, if you’re in a dry climate like me, you might need up to 10. The goal is to get the mixture to stick together really well as you can see from the second picture.
TIP: some witch hazel is mixed with water and you CANNOT use that kind. WATER WILL SET OFF THE BOMB!
Make Your Donuts
Add the frosting color first, only filling about 1/3 of the mold. Then fill the rest with the dough color mixture. Really press and compact the mixture into the molds tightly, press as firmly as possible. Don’t forget to clean away excess mixture from the “hole” area of the donut! Let solidify for at least 4 hours, up to overnight before removing from the mold.
Let the bombs sit untouched away from water. If water splashes on them, let’s say from the sink, bits of the bomb will be set off!
Un-Mold
Rip a sheet of parchment paper for a clean surface to “un-mold” your donuts on to. Gently turn the mold over, give it a few taps and they should fall right out!
Color Recipes
The reason I only recommend to use La Bomb colorant is because it is created specifically for bombs, with no water in the mixture! Remember water will set off the bombs. The dutch cocoa powder is ok too.
White Frosting:
no color!
Pink Frosting:
two drops of Rosy Pink La Bomb
Chocolate Frosting:
1/2 teaspoon Dutch Cocoa Powder
Cake Dough:
1 drop Adobe Brick La Bomb
1 drop Coral Orange La Bomb
1/4 teaspoon Dutch Cocoa Powder
1/2 teaspoon Fine Glitter
Feel free to create your own donut colors using any La Bomb colorant!
Making Sprinkles
To paint the sprinkles onto the donuts we’ll be using rubbing alcohol and mica colorant. Add just a pinch of color and 1/4 teaspoon of alcohol into small containers. Mix each color as you go…
Paint The Sprinkles
Using a small paint brush add sprinkles to your donuts! Do one color at a time, fully washing and drying your paint brush in between each color. Or by using a different paint brush for each color. Remember water sets off the bombs, so do this away from water and keep your hands dry!
Let dry for about 48 hours before you package!
Frosting + Sprinkles
Remember, your frosting and sprinkles can be ANY color you choose! Get creative and put your own spin on these donut favors!
