I have been wanting to create and share this exact project for more than 6 months now! This DIY Cross-stitch Alphabet Gift Tag is actually the project that spurred my idea for this “DIY Gift Wrap Week” – so welcome to day 4! Today I’ve teamed up with Fiskars, my favorite craft tool brand to bring you this project as I know you also love using their orange-handled tools. I love to hand sew and cross-stitch and if you’ve never tried cross-stitching before, this is a super easy and quick project that is sure to give you a sweet introduction to the craft! Each tag should take you no more than 15 minutes from start to finish and the end result will definitely impress the gift recipient. One of my favorite things to do at Christmas time is to sit by my tree, all lit up and hand sew holiday goodies – just like these tags! Don’t forget to share your versions of this project with us using the hashtag #somethingturquoisediy on Instagram and Twitter! Happy Crafting!

Use Chipboard For Your Tags
The thing about “cross-stitching” paper is that to make it look really good – the paper needs to be thick. Thicker than normal cardstock or else it can rip, wrinkle and tear. So I’m using chipboard which is a little thicker than a cereal box and can be found at any craft store; but the one I’m using is from Paper Source.
Punch Your Tags
Since we are using thick, chipboard – we need a punch that can handle it! Enter the amazing Fiskars Tag Thick Materials Shape Punch (Large), which specializes in punching all types of thick materials. These tags measure 2″ x 1 1/4″ and you can get 20 tags from each 8.5″ x 11″ sheet of chipboard.
Punch Holes In Your Tags
Using the Fiskars 1/4″ Heart Hand Punch, I punched heart shaped holes in my tags. Of course you can use regular circles, or any other shape – but these little hearts are so cute!
Download + Print My Free Alphabet Pattern
At the end of the post you’ll find my free cross-stitch alphabet pattern. Download and print onto regular printer paper.
NOTE: the letters G, H, M and W fit best on these tags in a horizontal layout, compared to vertical shown here.
Cut Out Your Letter
From the alphabet pattern, cut out the individual letter you would like to use for your tag. Center it on the tag and tape it down using a piece of washi tape. Here I’ve stacked 4 small pieces of felt together to be the base for the next step…
Pierce the Letter Outline
With your tag on top of the felt use a thumb tack to pierce each sewing hole. Press the thumb tack through the pattern and the chipboard – at the tip of each “X” arm. Where two “X’s” intersect you only need to pierce one hole. As you will actually be sewing each “X”.
Having the holes created in the tag before you sew, makes the process much easier and the risk of bending, ripping or tearing your tag very low. The felt behind the tag makes it easy to pierce the holes without stabbing your desk in the process.
Cross-stitch Your Letter Tag
Using embroidery floss, cross-stitch your letter! Most embroidery floss comes with 6 strands, so separate your floss into only 3 strands as 6 is a little too thick for this project. Work your way across the letter making each “X”. If you get lost in the design, refer to the pattern. Tie a knot on the back when you are done.
How Adorable Are These Tags!?!
Fun Wrapping Idea
Here I simply wrapped kraft gift boxes with strips of cardstock that matched each tags embroidery floss color. Then I wrapped each box with gold twine at least 6 times and added our adorable cross-stitch gift tags!
