How to Make a Heart Corner Bookmark for your Wedding Planner

Fact: Engagement season is upon us. Did you know the time between Thanksgiving and Valentine’s Day is the most popular for U.S., Canada, and UK marriage proposals in a calendar year? So why not kickstart 2022 with the cutest and easiest DIY you ever did see using materials you probably already have in your house! And even if you’re the one getting married, these make perfectly thoughtful last minute gifts for bridesmaids, wedding party people, and all those other wedding day VIPs. Upcycle fabric from those fabric samples you’ve acquired from planning or even an old dress with the prettiest pattern.

Not getting married? These are perfect for literally anyone, too. Teacher gifts, your favorite bookworm, your Mom, the list goes on.

Maker’s Note

Whether you prefer to hand embroider or use a sewing machine, you can use either for this project! I’ve done hand embroidered since it’s a bit more accessible for all crafters. You can also cut out your fabrics with an electronic cutting machine like Cricut using a simple heart shape. Make sure your heart has no curve at its point as you need a 90° angle for your book’s corner.

If you haven’t done handstitching before, practice on some scraps before doing this project. I’ll be using a running stitch (e.g., dotted line) and something like a backstitch (e.g., continuous line). Have fun and use whatever stitch you’d like!

PRINT YOUR TEMPLATE & CUT

Using our free heart template, print without resizing in your printer settings. Your printed out hearts should be sized at 2 inches when cut out. Cut along the dotted lines, and let’s get this simple DIY made!

CUT OUT YOUR FELTED SIDE

If you happen to have a corner piece available on your felt scraps, use the corner to make cutting your hearts easier!

CUT OUT YOUR FABRIC SIDE

Your fabric may have some stray strands when cutting, so try not to tug too much. You will end up needing to trim once everything is sewn together as the felt and fabric find their places with each other.

SEW YOUR TWO HEARTS TOGETHER

Starting from the felt side, do a basic stitch (or any preferred stitch!). The one I’ve done for these is called a running stitch (e.g., dotted line). On the back of my bookmark is like a backstitch (e.g., continuous line). You will need to create an “L” shape with your completed stitches leaving the curved heart section open. This is where you will insert it onto your book pages!
